Import and Continue a Novel Without Overwriting the Original
Before you start
- A readable txt (UTF-8 recommended) or epub file on the device.
- A connected text model through the official channel or BYOK.
- Enough provider quota or official credits for at least one generation.
Where to find it
Home > + > Import a novelReader > select text > Continue hereReader > Contents > branch badgeAI segment > Edit and regenerate
Step-by-step
Import from Home
Open Home → + → Import a novel and select the txt or epub in the system file picker. Open the new shelf item, let first-open conversion finish, and check the table of contents before generating.
Pick an exact insertion point
Navigate to the chapter, long-press near the point where the story should diverge, and adjust the selection to a complete sentence. Choose Continue here for an inserted AI segment or New branch for a larger rewrite from that point.
Set direction and scope
Write a short direction such as ‘she refuses the offer and follows the river north.’ Confirm the text model, template, output length, and whether to generate three next-step options.
Generate and review
Start generation and keep the Reader open until the stream settles. Read the join between source and generated prose, then use edit/regenerate if the tone or facts are wrong.
Preserve alternatives
Use the AI-segment candidate controls for another version. To switch branches, open Contents and tap the ⑂N branch badge beside the relevant chapter. Confirm the active route before continuing many chapters.
How to know it worked
- The table of contents matches the imported book closely enough to navigate.
- Generated prose has AI styling and the source paragraph remains unchanged.
- Contents shows a ⑂N branch badge for the chapter where a new route was created.
- Switching back to the source/main route restores the original continuation point.
Cost, data, and irreversible-risk notes
- File import and branch switching are local and do not cost credits. Each continuation, option generation, or regeneration is a separate model call and may be billed.
- Stopping or losing the connection does not prove that the provider charged nothing; check API request records before retrying repeatedly.
- The original import stays intact, but generated branches are app data. Export important work before uninstalling or switching app distribution channels.
Troubleshooting
Chapters are missing or split incorrectly
Likely cause: TXT headings are irregular or the epub table of contents is malformed.
What to do: Fix headings and re-export as UTF-8, or repair the epub TOC. Import the repaired file as a new book rather than assuming the existing parse changed.
Continue starts from the wrong place
Likely cause: The selection/viewport was not at the intended sentence, or a tail action was used from another chapter.
What to do: Cancel before generation if possible, return to the target chapter, select the exact sentence, and use the selection action. Delete the wrong AI segment only after checking which branch it belongs to.
The model ignores earlier facts
Likely cause: The context budget is too small, the relevant lore is outside the window, or the instruction conflicts with the source.
What to do: Shorten the requested output, raise context within model limits, add the crucial fact to the direction/worldbook, and regenerate once.
402 / insufficient credits
Likely cause: The official-channel balance cannot cover the request.
What to do: The failed attempt should not create content. Recharge, choose a cheaper official model, or switch to a configured BYOK model, then retry from the preserved draft.
429 / rate limit
Likely cause: The provider is throttling requests or quota is exhausted.
What to do: Wait for the provider window to reset, lower concurrency, or choose another enabled model. Do not hammer regenerate because every accepted request may be billable.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use Continue here or New branch?
Use Continue here for an inserted passage on the current route. Use New branch when you want the story after this point to diverge while keeping the old route readable.
Can I continue from the end of an unfinished book?
Yes. Go to the final readable point and use the tail continuation/selection action. You can keep several possible endings as separate branches.
Can I undo an AI continuation?
Delete the AI segment or switch back to the earlier branch. Regeneration keeps alternatives as candidates where supported, but exported backups are still recommended for valuable work.
