Create Your AI Companion: Look, Personality, Long-Term Memory, and Proactive Messages
Before you start
- Foreverse v76 or later with a connected text model (official channel or BYOK).
- An image-capable model only if you want an AI-generated portrait; an emoji or gallery photo works without one.
- Optionally, a character card you are allowed to use, or a chat transcript exported from another companion app.
Where to find it
Home > Companion tab > Create companionCharacter page > ⋮ > Make companionCompanion profile > Persona fileCompanion profile > Their lookCompanion chat > ⋮ > Memories
Step-by-step
Pick one of three ways to start
Open Home and switch to the Companion tab. With no companions yet, tap the centered Create companion button; afterwards use the A new encounter tile at the end of the polaroid wall. To reuse an existing character, open its page and choose ⋮ → Make companion. Coming from Doubao, Xingye, or a similar app, choose Move in from another app and paste the exported transcript — it quotes the extraction cost before doing anything.
✓ The creation form opens with fields for name, avatar, and a one-line persona.
Give them a face — or skip it for now
Under the avatar slot, tap Generate with AI: describe the appearance, let the model expand it, pick one of the 9 art styles, and generate a preview before accepting the square crop. The expansion is one text call and every generate press is one image call, with the cost shown on the button. No image model, or a failed attempt? Close the wizard and continue with an emoji or a gallery photo.
✓ The avatar shows your chosen portrait, emoji, or photo in the form.
Write the one-line persona and decide who speaks first
One concrete sentence beats a paragraph of adjectives — who they are and how they treat you. Leave the They speak first toggle on and, right after creation, one normal text call writes an in-character opener so they message you first. Turn it off and you get a free template greeting instead. If no model is usable at that moment the step is skipped silently at zero cost.
✓ After creation the chat opens with either the generated opener or the template greeting.
Answer 'Will they reach out to you?' deliberately
The closing sheet asks once whether they may message you first day to day. Confirming enables the default slots (morning 8:00, evening 22:00, miss-you after 24 quiet hours) and requests notification permission; the proactive-photo option on the same sheet stays off unless you tick it through a fee confirmation. Dismissing the sheet changes nothing — everything lives under Let them reach out on the profile page, with quiet hours and the daily cap in Promises with them.
✓ Proactive messages are in exactly the state you chose, and it survives reopening the profile.
Shape the personality after creation
Long-press their card (or open chat ⋮ → Their profile) to reach the profile page. Persona file is the full editable text of who they are. Their personality style offers Keep as is plus 6 presets that change only the speaking tone, never the persona or memory. Me, in their eyes takes how to address you, birthday, likes, and hard limits — up to 500 characters they remember every turn. All three are free.
Lock the look and check the first memories
Open Their look to pin a reference image, edit the Visual anchor (Extract from persona gives a draft), choose an Art style, and optionally generate a standard portrait — one image call with a preview before you adopt it. Then chat a few rounds, open ⋮ → Memories, and review what got extracted: every entry can be edited, disabled, or deleted, and the + button adds facts by hand.
✓ New selfies keep the same face, and Memories contains only facts you are comfortable with.
How to know it worked
- The Companion appears on the Companion-tab polaroid wall and opens into chat.
- The greeting matches the persona; with They speak first off it is the free template line.
- Persona file, personality style, and Me, in their eyes reread exactly as saved.
- Every entry in Memories can be edited or deleted, and manual facts stick.
- Proactive messages stayed in the state you chose — off means off.
Cost, data, and irreversible-risk notes
- Creating, renaming, and editing persona, style, and profile pages are free, local operations. Companion count has a free quota; past it a Pro unlock is offered.
- Billable moments are explicit and click-triggered: portrait expansion is one text call, each portrait generation one image call, the They speak first opener one text call, and importing chat memories from a card or another app quotes its call count first. Skipping is free, and re-running an interrupted import only bills the unfinished part.
- If a generation fails, the notice states whether that attempt was charged. A portrait that generated but failed to save was already billed and still exists — save it again instead of regenerating and paying twice.
- The Companion lives on this device; there is no cloud sync. Persona, memory, and chats move only through Export companion backup on the profile page. Chatting and memory extraction send the selected context to your chosen model provider, so keep passwords, API keys, and one-time codes out of personas and memories.
Troubleshooting
Generate with AI is missing or fails
Likely cause: No image-capable model is configured, or the provider call failed this time.
What to do: Set up an image model under Me → AI Models & Services, or continue with an emoji or photo and add the portrait later from Their look. The failure notice says whether the attempt was charged.
They never sent the first message
Likely cause: They speak first was off, or no text model was usable at creation, so the opener was skipped at zero cost.
What to do: Check the default text model and simply send the first message yourself — the toggle only affects the moment of creation. For day-to-day first messages, enable Let them reach out on the profile page.
Make companion asks about bringing chat memories over
Likely cause: The card has tavern chat history, and distilling it into memories takes real generation calls.
What to do: The dialog states roughly how many calls before starting. Accept and let it finish, or skip at zero cost; re-running later only processes the parts that never completed, without double billing.
Creation is blocked by a Pro dialog
Likely cause: The free companion quota is used up — restoring a backup counts against it too.
What to do: Export a backup of a companion you no longer use and delete it to free a slot, or unlock Pro if you want them all active.
Frequently asked questions
Is creating a Companion free?
Yes. Money is only spent on AI actions you explicitly trigger — portrait generation, the first-message opener, memory import — and each shows its cost before running.
How is a Companion different from a character-card chat?
A Companion adds editable long-term memory, a relationship archive, proactive messages, and calls — built for one ongoing relationship. Card chats follow the roleplay/tavern stack. Make companion keeps the original card intact, so both can coexist.
Can I change the look and personality later?
Yes, and it is free: Persona file is fully editable, the 6 personality-style presets change only the speaking tone, and Their look swaps reference images and art styles anytime. Memory is untouched by all of these.
Does my Companion sync to the cloud or my other devices?
No. Everything stays on this device. To move phones, use Export companion backup for a zip and restore it on the target device — treat that file as sensitive personal data.
