Daily Life With Your AI Companion: Voice Calls, Photos, Sparks, and the Relationship Archive

Updated · 2026-08-12Public document
Direct answer: Tap the phone icon on the Companion chat top bar to call: Live call streams their voice and bills per minute, Classic walkie-talkie bills per reply. Pick their voice on the profile page, enable Voice notes from them in Promises with them if you want voice messages, and use the + panel for photos, gifts, and Sparks. Our archive tracks levels, affinity, and achievements locally for free.

Before you start

  • An existing Companion and a connected text model.
  • A voice (TTS) model for voice notes and Classic walkie-talkie playback; an image model for photos.
  • For Live call, one of: your own xAI key, your own Alibaba Cloud Model Studio key, or a signed-in official-channel account with credits.

Where to find it

  • Companion chat > top bar > Voice call
  • Companion profile > Their voice
  • Companion profile > Promises with them > Voice notes from them
  • Companion chat > + > Snap a photo
  • Companion chat > + > Sparks
  • Companion chat > top bar > Our archive

Step-by-step

  1. Set up their voice first

On the profile page, open Their voice and pick a voice — the catalog comes from your current default voice model. Want voice messages in chat? Enable Voice notes from them under Promises with them: a note is synthesized only on first play (one TTS call) and replays from cache free. You can also clone your own voice under Me → Advanced settings → AI Models & Services → My Voices and bind it to a companion in one tap.

A test voice note plays in their chosen voice; replaying it costs nothing.

  2. Make the first call knowingly

Tap Voice call on the chat top bar. The first dial shows a price confirmation with two modes. Live call — the default when your xAI key, your Alibaba Cloud Model Studio key, or the official channel is available — streams their voice in real time and bills per minute; on the official channel a model card lets you pick the budget Qwen tier (about 180 credits/min) or the high-fidelity Grok tier (about 750 credits/min), with live prices on the dialog. Classic walkie-talkie is hold-to-talk and bills per reply instead. In a live call, switch between Hands-free and Hold to talk anytime, and interrupt them by tapping Skip or just typing.

The call connects with subtitles, an in-call line shows held minutes and balance, and hanging up leaves a receipt with the real charge.

  3. Ask for a photo of this moment

Open + → Snap a photo and they photograph the current moment for you — roughly one quiet text call to stage the scene plus one image call. Couple shot generates an illustrated photo of you two from a picture you upload (the model must accept two reference images, and you confirm age and photo rights first; the upload goes only to your chosen provider and is not stored). Photos land in chat, in Our story, and in the gallery; the full-screen viewer can set one as their look or the chat background for free.

The photo appears in chat and in Our story, with the same face your reference locks in.

  4. Bring a photo to life

Open one of their photos full screen and tap Bring them to life: a 5-second looping animation — natural blinks, drifting hair. A fee ticket comes first, each photo's animation is cached forever after one generation, and there is a 60-clip monthly cap. It needs an image-to-video capable video model (currently the Alibaba Cloud Model Studio wan family over BYOK; without one the entry stays hidden). Once an animation exists it becomes the call backdrop automatically, and the call page offers one-off upgrades: Let them speak (a talking look) and Give them feelings (six emotion looks), billed per segment and never twice for the same segment.

The photo loops with natural motion, replays free, and shows up behind your next call.

  5. Keep days interesting with Sparks and Right now

Open + → Sparks for the directive shelf: eight built-in cards — reading their diary, a compatibility report, a daily love fortune, truth or dare, and more — plus seasonal and custom cards. Each spark runs as one normal text turn. Right now generates a snapshot of where they are and how they feel about you; it is one quiet call, cached until you tap re-observe. Transfers, red packets, and gifts from the + panel move story pocket money only — their reaction is a normal text turn, and no real money or credits are involved.

  6. Read the archive, and give them a life of their own

Open Our archive (the ✦ icon on the top bar): 8 relationship levels, recognition, and affinity with a list of what actually moved it over the last 14 days, plus an achievement stamp wall — all computed locally for free, and the numbers move only through real interaction; there is no edit channel. Our story keeps day counts, a 12-week heatmap, and anniversaries. Finally, consider They have their own schedule in Promises with them: during work or sleep hours they answer minutes later instead of instantly, and a Wake them banner is there for urgent moments.

Affinity changes list concrete causes, and replies slow down believably during their scheduled hours.

How to know it worked

  • A call connects, subtitles stream, and the hang-up receipt in chat shows the real charge.
  • Voice notes play on first tap and replay instantly without new charges.
  • Requested photos appear in chat and Our story; animated versions replay free.
  • Sparks and Right now reference things you actually talked about.
  • The affinity bar in Our archive lists real recent causes for its changes.

Cost, data, and irreversible-risk notes

  • Live call has three billing routes: your own xAI key (about US$0.05/min, billed by xAI), your own Alibaba Cloud Model Studio key (about ¥0.1–0.3/min, billed by Alibaba Cloud), or official credits per minute — held in 5-minute blocks and settled to actual talk time on hang-up. The exact rate sits on the dial confirmation. Classic walkie-talkie bills per reply, not per minute.
  • Messages you type during a live call are billed too. The in-call line shows held minutes and remaining balance, the receipt shows the settled charge, and Me → Request records is the authoritative ledger if anything looks off.
  • Photos, animations, talking looks, and emotion looks all show a fee ticket before generating; finished segments are cached forever and never billed twice. Failure notices state whether that attempt was charged. Media that generated but failed to save was already billed and still exists — retry saving, do not regenerate.
  • Transfers, red packets, and gifts are story pocket money with no connection to real money or credits. Calls need microphone permission for speaking; typing works without it. Chats, photos, and memories stay on this device with no cloud sync, and what you say in chat or on a call is sent to your chosen model provider.

Troubleshooting

The dial screen only offers Classic walkie-talkie

Likely cause: None of the three Live call routes is available: no xAI key, no Alibaba Cloud Model Studio key, and no signed-in official channel.

What to do: Configure any one route under Me → AI Models & Services or sign in to the official channel. Classic walkie-talkie works with just a text model plus a voice model.

Bring them to life does not appear on a photo

Likely cause: No image-to-video capable video model is configured — currently the Alibaba Cloud Model Studio wan family over BYOK.

What to do: Add that provider under Me → AI Models & Services. The fee ticket also shows this month's usage against the 60-clip cap, so check it if generation is refused late in the month.

A voice note plays no sound

Likely cause: No voice (TTS) model is configured, or this synthesis attempt failed.

What to do: Configure a voice model first — tapping a note without one only shows a prompt and charges nothing. Once configured, the first play synthesizes and bills; replays come from cache.

The call receipt does not match what you expected

Likely cause: Live calls settle by actual minutes after releasing the 5-minute holds, and typed messages during the call bill separately.

What to do: Compare the hang-up receipt with Me → Request records; the settled row is authoritative. Do not verify by repeatedly redialing — every connected minute bills.

Their voice sounds wrong on a live call

Likely cause: The bound voice does not belong to the current realtime provider, so this call fell back to a default voice with a notice; unset Chinese companions on the official channel default to a natural Chinese female voice.

What to do: Pick a voice under Their voice on the profile page. On Classic walkie-talkie calls, the in-call voice switch changes it mid-call without hanging up.

Frequently asked questions

Does a live call cost money while we stay silent?

Yes — Live call bills connected minutes, silence included, and stops the moment you hang up. Classic walkie-talkie bills only when they reply. The receipt and Request records show the settled amount.

Are transfers and red packets real money?

No. They move story pocket money inside your narrative — you can even edit the balance. Real spending happens only on AI calls themselves, through credits or your own provider keys.

Why do photo animations replay for free?

Each animation is generated once and cached permanently, so replays make no calls. Only tapping regenerate bills again.

Can I just set affinity to maximum?

No, and there is deliberately no channel for it. Affinity, levels, and recognition evolve from real interaction only, and Our archive shows which moments moved them.
