Let the AI Rewrite or Continue Any Part of a Book: Directives, Approval, and Full Undo
Before you start
- Foreverse v76 or later with a connected text model (official channel or BYOK).
- A book already imported into Home — the writer edits books, not loose files.
- One concrete instruction in mind: what to change, where, and roughly how.
Where to find it
Reader > long-press text > selection toolbar > AI taskReader > center tap > top bar > More > AI taskTask capsule > View change list > Undo entire taskReader > top bar > More > Recent writer tasks
Step-by-step
Start from a selection or from the menu
For a specific passage, long-press it, adjust the selection, and tap AI task in the selection toolbar — the selection becomes the target. For a location you can name ("add an inner monologue at the end of chapter 12"), tap the page center, open the top-bar ⋮ More menu, and choose AI task there instead.
✓ The AI task sheet opens; with a selection it shows an 'About the selection' preview line.
Write the directive and attach material
Say what should change in one or two sentences. Tap Add reference material to attach another book, a character card, or a chat session as read-only reference. Check the assistant and model chips, and pick a Spoiler guard level: Off, Remind, or Strict — under Strict the writer may only read as far as you have read.
✓ The directive names one target and one outcome, and any attached material shows as a removable chip.
Check the pre-run receipt
Before writing starts you get a parameter receipt: how far into the book the writer will read, the spoiler-guard level, and which model runs the task. If anything is off, stop here — nothing has been billed for writing yet.
Watch the capsule and approve the write
A capsule at the bottom shows 'Writer is writing…' while prose streams into the target position; tap 'Jump to watch it write' if the spot is off-screen. Writes into the book pass your session approval mode — in Confirm mode a card offers Apply, Allow all onwards, or Reject with note. You can lock the screen or switch apps; the task keeps running and a system notification arrives when it finishes.
✓ The capsule reports where text landed and how many characters were written.
Verify the change list, undo if needed
Tap the capsule's change list to open 'What changed this task' and jump to each edit in the actual book. If the result is wrong, tap Undo entire task — the confirmation states that anything you wrote by hand in the meantime stays untouched. After dismissing the capsule, reopen the list via top bar ⋮ More > Recent writer tasks; it reads the on-disk task ledger, so it survives an app restart.
✓ After undo, the original text is back and your own manual edits are still there.
How to know it worked
- New prose streams into the exact position you targeted, not the end of the book by default.
- The change list enumerates every edit and each entry jumps to the real passage.
- Undo entire task restores the previous text while manual edits survive.
- A stopped or failed task reports honestly — 'Task finished · nothing was written' instead of a fake success.
Cost, data, and irreversible-risk notes
- The writing itself is billed like any model call: BYOK through your own key, the official channel in credits. One task can include several calls (reading the book, drafting, wrap-up checks), each billable.
- Confirmation, the change list, undo, @ references, chapter creation, and whole-book find-and-replace make no model calls and cost nothing.
- Stop only blocks future steps. Calls that already completed may already be charged — check API request records before rerunning, because a retry bills again. Whatever was already written stays visible in the book and in the change list until you undo it.
- Undo removes the written content from the book but never refunds model charges; the task ledger keeps the record.
- Attached reference books, cards, and chats are sent to the selected model provider as task context. Reference books are read-only — the writer never writes into them.
Troubleshooting
There is no AI task button
Likely cause: The build is older than the feature, or no text model is configured yet — the entry hides until the writer is ready.
What to do: Update to v76 or later and connect a text model under Me > AI Models & Services. Then look in the second row of the selection toolbar, or in the Reader top-bar ⋮ More menu.
The writer edits the wrong place
Likely cause: The directive named the location vaguely, or the selection did not cover the intended sentences.
What to do: Prefer the selection entry for precision. When stating a location in words, name the chapter and the anchor point explicitly. Review the target on the confirmation card before Apply; if it already landed wrong, use Undo entire task and resend.
Under Strict spoiler guard the writer says it cannot read later chapters
Likely cause: That is the point of Strict: the writer's reading is capped at your own reading progress.
What to do: Say in plain words that it may read ahead, or switch the guard to Remind or Off for this task. Note that a negated sentence like 'don't spoil the ending' will not unlock reading.
Undo stops partway or marks an entry as not auto-undoable
Likely cause: Undo halts at passages you edited by hand rather than overwrite them, and a few chapter-level operations are recorded in the ledger as not supporting automatic undo.
What to do: Read the undo report, keep or manually revert the flagged passages, and use Recent writer tasks to see exactly what the ledger recorded for each entry.
The task fails with 'official channel session expired'
Likely cause: Your official-channel sign-in lapsed mid-setup. The app refuses to silently fall back to a BYOK key, so the task stops up front.
What to do: Sign in again, or explicitly pick a BYOK model in the model chip. The error message confirms no BYOK model was used, so nothing was spent from your own key.
Frequently asked questions
Will undo delete text I typed myself?
No. Undo rolls back only what this task wrote; the confirmation dialog states that anything you wrote by hand in the meantime is untouched, and undo stops to report rather than overwrite a passage you edited.
The writer claims it finished — is that guaranteed?
Don't take the prose at its word; check the ledger. A wrap-up audit compares claims against actual writes, and a task that wrote nothing shows 'Task finished · nothing was written'. The change list is the source of truth.
I dismissed the capsule. Can I still undo?
Yes. Open the Reader top-bar ⋮ More menu and choose Recent writer tasks. It reopens the change list from the on-disk ledger, so viewing and undoing still work after killing and reopening the app.
After a rewrite, is the old version gone?
No. A segment rewrite keeps the previous version as a switchable candidate, and a whole-chapter rewrite archives the old text. Use the change list to jump in and compare before deciding.
