Honest comparison
Foreverse vs Character.AI
Character.AI is the easiest way to start AI roleplay: open the app, pick from millions of characters, chat free. The price is control — its models only, its content filter, and characters that cannot leave the platform. Foreverse trades that convenience for ownership: portable character cards, 60+ model providers via your own keys, and a library that lives on your phone, not in someone's database.

Convenience versus custody
Character.AI solved discovery: type a name, start talking, zero setup — and for casual chat that is hard to beat. The catch surfaces slowly. The character you spent months shaping cannot be downloaded. The model that gives her a voice can change under you overnight, and has. The filter applies to everyone equally, whatever story you are telling.
Foreverse starts from the opposite premise: characters are files you own. A card is a portable document with a published spec; a chat log is data on your device; a model is a setting you can change when a better one ships. Setup costs you ten minutes once. Custody is yours permanently.
What BYOK changes in practice
On Character.AI, model quality is whatever the platform serves this quarter. With your own keys, you pick per scene: a fast cheap model for casual banter, a frontier model for the chapter that matters, a regional provider for a language it handles better. When prices drop or a new model leads the pack, you switch in a minute — your characters never notice the change.
Pick Character.AI if
- You want zero-setup chat with a huge ready-made character catalog
- You prefer a curated, moderated platform experience
- You chat casually and do not care about exporting history
Pick Foreverse if
- You invest in characters and want them portable, in an open format
- You want to choose models and providers — and switch freely
- You want chats stored on your device, not on a platform
FAQ
Can I move my Character.AI personas into Foreverse?
There is no official export from Character.AI. The common route is recreating the persona as a chara_card_v3 card — description, personality, greeting, example dialogue. Community tools can help reconstruct definitions you wrote yourself.
Is Foreverse free like Character.AI?
The app's core is free. Model usage goes through your own API keys at provider list prices, or through optional credits for official channels. There is no subscription wall in front of your own keys.
Does Foreverse have a content filter?
Foreverse does not add a platform-wide filter on top of your BYOK traffic; the policies that apply are those of the model provider you choose. You pick the provider whose terms fit your writing.
