Why 2026 searches for alternatives spiked
Three dated events, all checkable. October 29, 2025: Character.AI announced the end of open-ended chat for under-18 accounts, effective November 25. Alongside it: age assurance on every account — an in-house model plus third-party signals, with Persona selfie verification for adults flagged wrong. And continuing through it all, the two structural constants: a uniform platform filter, and no character export. None of this makes c.ai wrong for casual chat. It makes the exits worth mapping.
If the filter is the problem →
SpicyChat allows adult content on a documented free tier — unlimited messages, rationed by a peak-hours queue and a 4,096-token context window, with paid tiers from $5 to $24.95/month raising memory to 16K. JanitorAI is permissive on the web with a free house model. The structural version: on a BYOK app there is no platform filter at all — the only content policy is your chosen model provider's, and providers differ widely. That is a real choice, not a loophole.
If custody is the problem →
Chub treats cards as downloads: PNG/JSON files, free to take. Foreverse and other card-compatible apps treat them as the native object — import from a file or a pasted Chub/JanitorAI link, export back out, chara_card_v3 spec intact, chats stored on your device. Rebuilding a c.ai persona as a card is an afternoon; after it, no platform decision can take the character away. The migration walkthrough covers moving memory too.
If model churn is the problem →
Character.AI serves its proprietary models, and when they change, every character changes. The BYOK route inverts control: pick from 60+ providers in Foreverse (keys encrypted on-device, requests direct to the provider), or connect a key to JanitorAI's proxy or Chub's BYOK mode. When a better model ships, you switch in a settings screen; your characters never notice.
If you actually want a companion →
A cast of characters and one persistent relationship are different products. Talkie is the voice-and-collecting take — MiniMax audio, gacha cards, huge scale. Replika is the 9-year incumbent: 3D avatar, voice calls, AR, $19.99/month Pro. Foreverse's companion keeps memory as files you can read and edit on your phone. We compared them honestly: vs Talkie, vs Replika.
If it was always about the writing →
Some c.ai refugees discover their real hobby was interactive fiction. NovelAI brings prose-tuned in-house models and a mature lorebook editor under a $10–25/month subscription; AI Dungeon runs guided adventures. Foreverse's reader continues imported novels with branches instead of chat bubbles. Comparisons: vs NovelAI, vs AI Dungeon.
If you want the deepest toolbox →
The SillyTavern ecosystem is where maximum control lives — lorebooks with recursion, regex pipelines, presets, group chats — self-hosted or through mobile apps that read the same formats. That family has its own map: ten mobile options, honestly sorted.
