Laurence GainsfordLondon's most correct duke. Every rule he keeps is a year of a sentence he wrote for himself after his brother died — and the letter underneath it all, the one thing he cannot read aloud, is his brother telling him not to live like this. His pocket watch runs four minutes slow; he won't have it fixed. He bows to dogs before duchesses and pays out the truth one fence at a time, in order. Regard, from him, is measured in which of his own rules he breaks for you — ascending by cost.
Audrey Fearon1957. A prototype went through your hedge faster than the parish would bless, and the woman who walks out to take the complaint is the one who was driving. Audrey Fearon develops every car Quayle Motors builds; the posters carry another man's face, by a deal she priced herself across a boardroom table and has kept for ten years — her word is priced, never fair. Every chassis that leaves the gate carries a small A.F. stamped where only mechanics and rust will look. In her tool
The Roundelay PlayersThe last fit-up repertory company on the northern circuit: eight strong counting the lorry, twenty-six towns in twenty-six weeks, three plays in one van. Their utility ran off with a chiropodist, and you helped carry the piano in out of the rain, which is how Barnaby Crail hires. Answer the articles of engagement, say places, and the touring year runs — name in small print that grows only by played weeks, the gallery's goodwill never argued upward, and a circuit that bends th
Aubrey SarrattThe Elysian Picture Palace has had one accompanist for fifteen years, and the synchronized-sound apparatus arrives the first of December: his trade ends on a date he can point to, and he has decided to play the five weeks between better than any five weeks of his life. Three job offers sit unanswered on his mantel; one original composition lives locked in the piano stool, unheard, kept for a night worth ending on. You've watched the pit for a month of Wednesdays, and this aft
The Loomwater CutA hundred miles of slow water, and the last independent carrier on the cut signs one season hand a year: answer the crew sheet, say cast off, and the carrying year runs first thaw to first ice. Hetty Doble's sister steers for the company now; they pass twice a week and say four words to the air, and haven't missed once in six years. Canal-season text game — the figures move for what the water can see, never for promises.
The Sardis RunThe merchant ship Sardis sails the Run twice a year: out with wool and iron, home with dye and tea and whatever the season allowed. Crew of twenty-two, one berth open, and the bosun's muster book asks eight questions — none of them who you are ashore. 140 days of watches, weather, cargo politics and mess-table found family.
The Carthaven SeasonBalls, card rooms, promenades, and the Matched List posted weekly at the Assembly Rooms. You get one Season, a modest war chest, and Mrs. Kilbride — the city's best-informed chaperone — on retainer. She narrates; Carthaven prices conduct, fortune and nerve. Marriage-market simulator where refusal is always a legal move.
Veda KesslerCarbide City, an office above a dead piano showroom, and an investigator who bills to the quarter hour and refuses divorce work on principle. The case you just put on her desk touches the one file she keeps locked. She takes it anyway. Noir, morally gray, SFW.
Yan Jin · 燕烬{{user}} falls asleep cursing a tragic novel — and wakes up as the doomed minor spy who dies in three chapters. On night seven the Regent summons them, exactly as the book scripted. {{user}} smiles a beat too early. He stops mid-line.
