Import a SillyTavern Character Card and Start Chatting on Android

Updated · 2026-08-10Public document
Direct answer: Open Home → + → Import Tavern character card → Pick from phone and select the uncompressed PNG, JSON, or .charx file. Review the import preview/warnings, open the card from Home → Characters, and choose Start chat. In chat, confirm the model pill and Current status before sending. No Termux or desktop SillyTavern server is required.

Before you start

  • The original card file, sent as a file rather than a compressed social-media image.
  • A connected text model; a vision model is optional for image attachments.
  • For adult cards, the account/device must pass the app's applicable age and content controls.

Where to find it

  • Home > + > Import Tavern character card > Pick from phone
  • Home > Characters > Character detail > Start chat
  • Chat > ⋮ > Current status
  • Long-press message > Prompt

Step-by-step

  1. Protect the source file

Download the card as a document/file. If both PNG and JSON/.charx are available, keep both until import is verified.

  2. Import from Home

Open Home → + → Import Tavern character card → Pick from phone. Select PNG, JSON, or .charx; review the import preview plus any compatibility, script/network, or age warning instead of skipping it.

  3. Inspect what travelled with the card

Open Home → Characters and open the card detail. Check name, description, greeting, example dialogue, and alternate greetings. Use the import report or Me → Advanced settings → Character Cards & Tavern → Tavern Asset Hub to confirm embedded lore, regex, Quick Reply, and referenced assets.

  4. Start a clean session

Choose Start chat and read the greeting. In chat, confirm the model pill; open ⋮ → Current status to select Persona, writing style, and World lore as needed before sending.

  5. Send a diagnostic first message

Reply to a concrete detail in the greeting. After the response, inspect the message prompt if you need to verify whether lorebook entries or card instructions were injected.

How to know it worked

  • The character detail shows real card fields rather than only an image.
  • The greeting and alternate greetings are present as expected.
  • The first response stays in character and the session is saved under that card.
  • The import report or Tavern Asset Hub accounts for embedded lore/regex/Quick Reply assets instead of silently losing them.

Cost, data, and irreversible-risk notes

  • Importing and inspecting a card is local and free. Sending, regenerating, continuing, image generation, translation, and TTS can each create separate billable calls.
  • A chat request sends the card prompt, selected history, active lore, Persona, and your message to the chosen provider. Review sensitive cards before using a cloud provider.
  • Do not assume a pretty PNG still contains card data after a social platform resizes it. Keep the original export outside the app.

Troubleshooting

PNG is treated as a normal image / no card data

Likely cause: The embedded ccv3/chara chunk was stripped by compression or editing.

What to do: Get the original PNG as a file, or import JSON/.charx. A screenshot cannot be converted back into the missing embedded fields.

Unsupported or malformed .charx

Likely cause: The archive structure or manifest is invalid, incomplete, or from an incompatible exporter.

What to do: Re-export from the source tool, keep the zip/container intact, or use the card's JSON version. Review the import report for the first invalid asset.

The greeting appears but Send has no model

Likely cause: No enabled default text model is available.

What to do: Open Me → AI Models & Services, test and enable a text model, return to the session, and select it without reimporting the card.

The character ignores its lorebook

Likely cause: No entry triggered, the book is disabled, scan depth/budget excluded it, or a key does not match the recent text.

What to do: Open active worldbook entries and Prompt Inspector, test the key against the actual conversation text, and avoid making every entry constant.

Frequently asked questions

Which character-card formats work?

Foreverse accepts card PNGs with embedded data, JSON cards, and V3 .charx containers. Exact asset compatibility depends on what the exporter included.

Do I need Termux or a PC?

No. Foreverse is a native Android app and runs the card/chat workflow directly. The model request goes to the provider you selected.

Will importing a card publish it?

No. Local import adds it to your device. Publishing or sharing is a separate explicit action.
