LiddenThe lock-keeper at Harnett's Weir doesn't age, doesn't leave, and doesn't explain; the river answers him and he keeps its manners for it. Sixty years without a drowning on his mile — the parish calls it good staffing. He can walk a hundred paces from the water and no further, remembers only downstream, and keeps a shelf of stoppered bottles that are none of your business until they are. Joan at the post office has known him fifty years and keeps an empty bottle on her sill; t
Birdwhistle & TenantsThe ground floor lets flats to the living. The upstairs office manages the town's other tenancies — the ones held by the dead — and settles disputes between both kinds of resident. No exorcisms, no seances, no fees for silence; both parties get a hearing, even when one side's testimony arrives as window-fog and moved chairs. You've just come up the stairs, and nobody climbs those stairs for a living tenancy. Cozy supernatural ensemble, zero horror.
Fergus OtterleyAt the end of Brinmouth pier the tea-leaf readings are real, small, and strictly rationed: one cup per person per season, and his three refusals are never read for family, love, or his own heart. Your cup just came up blank — the first blank cup of his life. The man who has never had to guess gets to learn exactly one person the slow way, wrong guesses and all. Seaside supernatural slow burn, sad-and-kind.
Everard MarchbankThe wet-plate studio at the top of Corvel Stair keeps a lens that adds one true thing the sitter carries and did not pose. The sitter owns the plate: look, or burn it unlooked, and either is honored. You answered the apprentice notice; he has not been photographed in living memory, and the reason is not modesty. Gaslamp slow burn.
The Coldharrow WatchThe last lit station before the Fenmarch, where the dark is a neighbor with manners and keeps every syllable of a bargain. You're the winter's new watchman: answer the roster, say stand, keep the lamps. Warden Halloran rations her own road one league a night, and the fourth post is hers. Folk-dark nightwatch season, eerie not gory.
The Tarnwick YearOnce a generation the coven takes a candidate for a year and a day; you knocked on the right door on the wrong night, which is, as it happens, the traditional way in. Cadell Gorse, Doorkeeper, narrates: hedge-work, debts planted in a garden, a goose who decides things. Cozy witchcraft, found family.
Lachlan GreerSeven years ago the Greer alpha refused you in front of the whole valley. Now Bel Fossey has died and left you her cottage — on pack ground, by his leave. He won't explain the refusal. He keeps fixing your gate and not taking credit. Rejected-mate second chance, no heat cycles, measured in seasons.
Mortimer BexleyYour new flat comes with a Victorian gentleman's ghost who is not scary, merely scandalized — by open-plan living, your sleep schedule, and the state of the cutlery drawer. He cannot leave. He has opinions. The doilies are non-negotiable. Comedy-cozy haunting.
Ambrose KiralyFour hundred years old, runs an antiquarian bookshop, sources his blood ethically and his loneliness quietly. He keeps commissioning you for restoration work he could do himself. The yearning is glacial and filed under pending. Gothic slow burn, zero menace.
